Kal-Haven Outpost

Our Story

Robert and Scott met in a college dorm and quickly realized they both shared a passion for camping and the great outdoors.  We took several cross country road trips, taking advantage of the afford-ability and flexibility of tent camping to make it work on tight college budgets.  We stayed in touch over the years and in 2015 Scott purchased the property that is now the Kal-Haven Outpost.  He intended to move there with his growing but quickly realized that the property was too gorgeous to keep to himself.  He then called Robert, who had recently moved to Cheyenne, WY and purchased a house, to see if he wanted to make the campground that they had half-jokingly talked about starting around campfires for years.  Plans practically immediately started falling into place, and Robert and his wife Heather sold their house in weeks and moved to South Haven to get started.

Construction on the Kal-Haven Outpost started in the winter of 2015, with Robert building almost 80 picnic tables in the unheated garage while Scott got the permitting process pushed through as quickly as possible.  As soon as things thawed in 2016, we started building what you see now with a huge focus on keeping as much of the labor and materials as possible local.  The old horse barn at the front of the property had been converted into two rental units years ago with full kitchens and bathrooms.  Scott and Robert took the unique framework and breathed new life into it from floor to ceiling.  The cabins were built by local craftsmen and finished out by Robert himself with rustic knotty pine paneling and all of the modern conveniences one would expect in a camping cabin.  The clean bathrooms at The Outpost are a cut above the facilities that any other campgrounds offer, featuring large format tiles, rough cut hickory, a fully handicap accessible bath/shower and private shower rooms. We plan to continue improving and expanding our offerings for years to come, so if you come up with any ideas or suggestions while sitting around a campfire, we would love to hear them!  We feel immensely privileged that we are now able to share with all of you the fruits of our continual labor and we sincerely hope that you can come and enjoy the journey with us!
